Dreaming of Spain or Portugal?

Here’s how Provident Travel can make it extraordinary

Traveling to Spain or Portugal is one thing. Experiencing these amazing countries privately, seamlessly and with the kind of insider access that turns a good trip into an unforgettable one—that’s something else entirely.

Provident Travel Advisors Debra Clark and Ellen Wyler recently traveled to Spain to learn more about Made for Spain and Portugal, a luxury travel company that works exclusively in those countries, crafting private, customized experiences for discerning travelers.

We asked both advisors to share what makes Provident Travel’s partnership with the tour company so special, and what it means for travelers who want more than just a vacation.

Tell us about Made for Spain and Portugal.

Clark: When a client comes to me wanting to explore Spain or Portugal on their own terms, not on a group tour or a cruise, this is who I turn to. Made for Spain and Portugal is a company based in Spain that specializes in planning private, customized trips exclusively in those countries. They handle transfers, hotels and guides, and can get you into experiences you simply couldn’t arrange on your own.

How does Provident Travel work with the company?

Clark: The way it works is that I get to know what my client wants—their travel style, what they want to see, how much structured time versus free time they prefer—and Made for Spain and Portugal builds the trip around that. We always land on something that fits perfectly.

What stood out about your visit to Barcelona?

Clark: We were able to experience firsthand the expertise of Made for Spain and Portugal during three days in Barcelona, with a company representative by our side the entire time. We saw Antoni Gaudí's iconic architecture, including the famous apartment building La Pedrera, and the Sagrada Família with its glittering painted spires. We also visited the Palau de la Música Catalana, a modernist concert hall, and the Fundació Joan Miró, a museum dedicated to the celebrated Spanish artist, which is situated on the hill of Montjuïc and offers sweeping views over the city.

They took us to a local food market, not the Boqueria but a smaller one where people from Barcelona actually shop, with vendors selling fresh octopus, extraordinary cheeses, pastries and cured meats.

We also had the chance to tour six hotels that Made for Spain and Portugal works with, and we dined at each one. Each hotel was terrific, but two really stood out. At El Palace Barcelona, which opened in 1919 as the former Ritz of Barcelona, the management couldn't do enough for us, even pulling off last-minute Sagrada Família tickets and taking us to the rooftop of the hotel at sunset. Serras Barcelona, a boutique hotel near the port, was equally impressive. The building that houses the hotel has a remarkable history. In 1896, a 15-year-old Pablo Picasso used its rooftop as his first studio, where he painted his early masterwork Ciencia y Caridad (Science and Charity). Today, that same rooftop has been transformed into a stunning terrace with a plunge pool and a restaurant where guests can dine with sweeping views of the Mediterranean.

I can’t say enough about visiting Barcelona in the off-season. Although we were there in early December, we never needed a coat. The crowds were minimal; the weather was gorgeous and the city felt like ours to explore.

travel advisor Ellen Wyler in Toledo, Spain

You took a day trip to Toledo, Ellen. How did Made for Spain and Portugal handle the logistics?

Wyler: Toledo had always been on my must-visit list—it’s an ancient, beautifully preserved city with water surrounding it on nearly every side, a beautiful Catholic church and a historic Jewish quarter. I simply told Made for Spain and Portugal I wanted a guided day there to see the highlights, and they took care of absolutely everything. They arranged the train from Madrid— it’s just 30 minutes by high-speed rail—and when I arrived at the Toledo station, my guide was there waiting for me.

My guide and I had a private driver who took us to an overlook of the city. Wherever the streets were pedestrian-only, we walked, with the guide explaining everything along the way. After the tour, my guide walked me back to the train station and waited with me until my train arrived. In a small city where very few people speak English, that kind of attentiveness is invaluable. It’s exactly the level of care I would arrange for my own clients, and experiencing it firsthand gave me tremendous confidence in recommending Made for Spain and Portugal.

What type of traveler is an ideal fit for Made for Spain and Portugal?

Wyler: It’s perfect for someone who wants the freedom of independent travel but with every detail taken care of. If you want your own driver, your own guide, an itinerary built entirely around what you love, then Made for Spain and Portugal is for you. If something unexpected comes up, there’s someone right there on the ground to help. Made for Spain and Portugal is available throughout the entire trip. You’re never on your own unless you want to be.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion, it’s also worth knowing that Made for Spain and Portugal excels at personal touches—flowers in your room, a private photographer at a stunning location, or early access to a museum before the crowds arrive.
